Patterns, Shapes and Lines in Nature

I love seeking out patterns, shapes, lines and colorful subjects in nature.  It’s good exercise for my eyes and brain.  Nature is a never ending supply of all of these things.  Below are some photos of various plants, flowers and trees that caught my eye. The first photo is titled Music in the Garden, because the blades of grass reminded me of musical notes.

Late fall is a great time to visit the Grand Teton National Park especially when the mountains are covered in snow. During my visit, the bushes along the water's edge at Oxbow Bend were vibrant. I thought they would be the perfect way to frame the snow capped Tetons in the background.  The Tetons are majestic no doubt, but when I saw them that day capped in snow and so far away, they looked small and unreachable.

Photography Tip - Isolating Your Subject

We live in a hectic, fast paced world. It seems like everyone is always pressed for time. A Mary Chapin carpenter song wraps it up perfectly - " ... everybody's got to go, got to be, got to get somewhere." I know this feeling all too well and have consciously made changes in my life to slow down. Slowing down allows us to connect with and see our subjects more clearly.

Photography Tip - Using Repetition Creatively

Seeking out and photographing repeating patterns is a great way to exercise your eye so to speak.  It forces you to slow down and really observe your surroundings. It’s amazing what you will find and see when you slow down. Botanical gardens are treasure troves of repeating patterns and one of my favorite places to take photographs with my 70-200mm lens.
